LGBT Tech Signs Open Letter on Irish Encryption Bill

LGBT Tech has joined a coalition of global organizations and cybersecurity experts in signing an open letter urging the Irish government to reconsider legislation that would undermine end-to-end encryption.

The proposed Irish Communications (Interception and Lawful Access) Bill would grant police access to encrypted messaging services. If enacted, it would jeopardize the security and privacy of all those who rely on encrypted platforms to communicate safely.

For LGBTQ+ communities, encryption isn’t just a technical feature. It’s a lifeline. From accessing affirming health care to seeking community, privacy protections are essential for safety, dignity, and expression, especially for those living in non-affirming households or hostile regions.

Weakening encryption, even with the intention of improving safety, creates vulnerabilities that can be exploited by bad actors and authoritarian governments alike. No backdoor can be built “just for the good guys.”

LGBT Tech remains committed to advancing privacy-first digital policies and ensuring the LGBTQ+ community’s safety in every corner of the internet. We will continue to advocate for strong encryption as foundational to human rights, digital equity, and self-determination.
