LGBT Tech Submits Comments in FTC RFI on Technology Platform Censorship

This week, LGBT Tech submitted formal comments to the Federal Trade Commission in response to its inquiry into platform censorship (FTC Docket No. FTC-2025-0023). Our comments challenge the unsubstantiated claims of systemic anti-conservative bias that underlie this inquiry, emphasizing that content moderation is a critical civil rights safeguard for marginalized communities. Citing early data from our forthcoming 2025 digital experience survey, we highlighted that 76% of LGBTQ+ adults and 94% of transgender adults say online spaces have had a significant impact on discovering and learning about their identities—a reminder that these platforms are lifelines, not just communication tools.

We urge the FTC to reject the false narrative that content moderation inherently suppresses conservative speech and instead focus on protecting the free expression, safety, and dignity of all users. Our recommendations include protecting editorial freedom, ensuring policy transparency, rejecting politicized interference, and preserving privacy and safety. As digital spaces face increased scrutiny, it is critical to ensure that marginalized voices remain protected, and that digital platforms can continue to serve as affirming, inclusive spaces for all.
