The Benton Institute for Broadband & Society recently highlighted LGBT Tech’s new report, Beyond Binary: LGBTQ+ Rights in the Digital Landscape, underscoring the dual nature of digital access for LGBTQ+ communities: it offers empowerment but also exposes deep equity and privacy challenges
Key findings from LGBT Tech’s report include:
Digital literacy & education: 73% of LGBTQ+ adults use online platforms for learning.
Health access: 44% of LGBTQ+ adults (and 70% of transgender individuals) rely on digital spaces for health information.
Job opportunities: 41% of LGBTQ+ adults and 68% of transgender adults turn to online platforms for finding inclusive employment.
Community & identity: 81% of LGBTQ+ adults (93% of transgender adults) connect with supportive communities online; 74% credit these platforms with shaping their self‑understanding
The report also emphasizes policy challenges, such as inconsistent broadband coverage, privacy gaps, harmful online regulation, and biased AI systems, and positions LGBT Tech’s initiatives like PowerOn, PATHS, and Digital Navigator as vital solutions for bridging technology gaps in underserved LGBTQ+ populations.
LGBT Tech’s feature in the Benton Institute underscores how essential it is to recognize and address the unique digital needs of LGBTQ+ communities. By advocating for inclusive policy and grassroots action, the report charts a path toward true digital equity.
