LGBT Tech Joins Global Call for Uniform Phone Unlocking Rules

ree

In a timely feature, BroadbandBreakfast.com reports that LGBT Tech has joined a coalition of advocacy groups, including MMTC, Asian Pacific American Advocates, and ALLvanza, in supporting Verizon’s request for consistent phone unlocking standards before the FCC.

The current policy, which mandates unlocking after 60 days for some carriers but not others, disproportionately burdens smartphone-dependent communities, especially Black and Hispanic users, who often rely on mobile devices as their primary source of internet access. The coalition argues Verizon's proposal would enhance digital equity by promoting fair access, device affordability, and privacy protections.
