LGBT Tech Highlights Risks of KOSA in The Verge Coverage

ree

In a The Verge article titledSenate passes the Kids Online Safety Act”, LGBT Tech is featured among digital rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups warning about the unintended consequences of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA).

The piece notes that while KOSA aims to protect children from online harms such as bullying and cyber-addiction, its broad “duty of care” mandate could inadvertently lead platforms to over-censor critical content, including LGBTQ+ support resources, to avoid liability. As part of a coalition, including the ACLU, EFF, and NetChoice, LGBT Tech raised concerns that this might result in platforms aggressively filtering “First Amendment‑protected, educational, and even lifesaving content.”

LGBT Tech underscores that these measures could particularly harm LGBTQ+ youth, especially those in unsupportive home environments who rely on online spaces for community and identity. The organization continues to advocate for more balanced, privacy-conscious solutions that safeguard minors without compromising critical access to affirming and educational content.
