Earlier this month, LGBT Tech joined 19 other civil society organizations in signing a joint letter of support for California’s AB 322, the “California Location Privacy Act of 2025.”
This bill would ban the sale of consumer location data and limit the collection and use of location data to only what is necessary to provide requested services. Under this bill, entities would be prohibited from collecting, using, or storing the location of an individual unless it is essential to providing the goods or services requested by them.
This bill is a crucial step in protecting the privacy and safety of LGBTQ+ people, whose sensitive location data can expose details about their gender identity, sexual orientation, or medical care – putting them at risk of discrimination, harassment, or violence. This helps ensure that confidential information isn’t misused, collected, or sold by private entities, providing safeguards for our community in an increasingly volatile political environment.
LGBT Tech applauds the bill authors for taking a crucial step towards protecting California’s most vulnerable digital communities, and we urge the legislature to move forward in passing this much needed legislation.
