Upgrading Your Phone This Holiday Season? The FTC Can Help with That

December 3, 2019

On November 15, the Federal Trade Commission released a blog post title "Upgrading Your Phone? 4 Things You Should Do First." The blog post, linked below, offers instructions for clearing personal data off phones before trading them in (although the post focuses on phones primarily, the information could easily apply to other tech devices). Included in the FTC's post is this graphic, which outlines the four important steps people should take for clearing personal data off their tech devices.

With the holidays fast approaching, it's important for anyone considering or receiving an upgrade to make sure their old tech is taken care of. Following the FTC's four points should help make upgrading this season easier than before.

At LGBT Tech, we understand the importance of connecting our LGBTQ+ communities to the technology they need to thrive, and our PowerOn program makes that connection happen on a regular basis. Since most of our tech is donated, we take data erasure very seriously. Nothing gets sent without first going through steps 2, 3, and 4 of the FTC's recommendation. Everything we send, we send with a clean slate.

As you upgrade all your devices this holiday season (and beyond!), make sure your older versions get taken care of properly. PowerOn can not only help with that, but also make sure that your old devices find a second life helping LGBTQ+ individuals make the connections they need.
